Which One Doesn't Belong?

August FUN!
(to start warming up our brains for the start of school)

Which One Doesn't Belong?

Come explore the images on this month's post. Think about which of the images does not belong with the other three images in the set. What is a reason you can give to explain WHY it does not belong? Take some time to play and to learn about this fantastic strategy by trying a few of the game boards that are posted below.  After playing a bit, think of ideas of how you might create your own Which One Doesn't Belong game set -- I'd love for you to send it to me via email and I'll post your game board on this page for others to try out and to use with their students.

So here's a little story behind the inspiration of the first image: I recently returned from an amazing long weekend on Chincoteague Island (yep, where the wild ponies live!). Each morning I took a long walk on the beach with my husband (we were celebrating our 27th wedding anniversary - hooray for us!)  Most of the beach is only accessible if you are willing to walk and walk and walk.  One evening, I was having a conversation with a local boat captain. He said, "To find the best shells, you just have to be willing to walk farther than the last guy walked." That's so true in terms of seashell-hunting.

...it's profound if you think of it as a life metaphor....

Anyway, we walked further than many and found some amazing seashells on our journey. Take a look at four of the seashells my husband and I found this past weekend while walking on the beach.

Which One Doesn't Belong?

What is a reason you can give to explain WHY the one you selected does not belong with the other three?

Try to phrase it in a way that describes the feature that is tying the other three together (i.e. Three of the shells are mostly black, but the top right shell is not mostly black).

Okay, now look at the image again.
Pick a DIFFERENT image from the set above. What makes that image "not belong" with the other three images? Can you eliminate each for its own specific reason?

Now Let's Try the Game Using a Number Set

Eliminate the numbers one-by-one. What rule/pattern do the other three numbers follow, but not the one you are eliminating?

Can You Think of Reasons Each of These Images Do Not Belong?
